Media Coverage Alaska Communications Systems Welcomes Annette Jacobs and David Southwell to Its Board of Directors

Alaska Communications Systems Group, Inc.

July 25, 2006

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Jul 25, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Alaska Communications Systems Group, Inc. ("ACS") (NASDAQ: ALSK) announces the voting results of its Annual Meeting of Stockholders held July 24, 2006 in Anchorage, Alaska and welcomes two new directors to its board.

ACS stockholders elected Annette Jacobs of Seattle, WA and David Southwell of Saltspring Island, BC to serve on the board. Jacobs and Southwell were both elected to the board's Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee, and Jacobs was also elected to the board's Executive Committee.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with Annette and David," said Liane Pelletier, ACS President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chair of the Board. "They both bring extensive telecom backgrounds to the table, and I am confident that they will provide significant contributions to ACS. Their leadership roles throughout the telecommunications industry will add to our focus in areas of marketing, operations and technology. Additionally, their customer-focused leadership styles complement ACS' competitive strategy. We welcome them both."

Annette Jacobs currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SafeHarbor Technology Corporation in Seattle, WA. SafeHarbor packages and optimizes knowledge content and search capabilities which increase web-based self-service. In the roughly two years under Jacobs' tenure, SafeHarbor has grown revenues more than 35 percent with existing clients while adding Fortune 25 companies to the company's portfolio.

Jacobs entered the technology sector after a 24-year executive career, managing multi-billion dollar business units in the wireless and telecom sector with GTE Wireless, Verizon Wireless, Qwest Communications and AT&T. Jacobs' positions, as well as her involvement with corporate and non-profit boards, have spanned the country. Along with serving on ACS' board, she is currently a director with the Washington Software Alliance (WSA).

David Southwell is Chairman of the Bell Canada 2010 Vancouver Olympics Technology Board which is responsible for overseeing technology, implementation and operations for the Games. His current position follows 35 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, primarily with Bell Canada -- the largest telecom company in Canada. He carries in-depth knowledge and experience in operations and telecom technology in both wireless and wireline. Following numerous senior officer positions at Bell Canada, Southwell retired last year as the Group President of Operations. In that capacity, Southwell was responsible for customer and network operations plus fleet and real estate during a time of integration and personnel reductions.

In addition to serving on the ACS and Olympics Technology boards, Southwell has previously served on numerous others, including six years with Expertech Network Installation, Inc., most recently as Chairman.

Six incumbent directors were reelected to serve on the board: Liane J. Pelletier, Brian D. Rogers, John M. Egan, Patrick Pichette, Gary R. Donahee and Edward J. Hayes, Jr. for terms ending upon the 2007 Annual Meeting of Stockholders.

Three ACS Board Directors did not run for re-election this year: W. Dexter Paine III, Byron I. Mallott, and John Gibson. ACS appreciates the contributions of and thanks them for their service over the years. Paine and Mallott were members of the board's Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee, and Paine was also a member of the Executive Committee. Gibson was not a member of any committee.

The company's stockholders also ratified the appointment of KPMG LLP as independent auditors of the company for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2006.

Assistance in the director search for Annette Jacobs was provided by The Boston Club.
